Background:

I obtained my medical degree from Cambridge University and then did basic surgical training in the South East Thames Region. Between appointments in the NHS I worked in surgical programmes for aid agencies in conflict situations; Afghanistan, Cambodia, Angola, Sri Lanka, Ethiopia, and Rwanda (during the 1994 genocide)

I passed my FRCS in 1994 and then did higher surgical training on the Guy's and St Thomas' rotation in London. After passing my FRCS(Tr & Orth) in 1999 I was appointed trauma fellow in San Antonio, Texas where I completed my Mchir dissertation in the biomechanics of landmine injury. I then went to be a medical missionary in Malawi for over three years.

Whilst in Malawi I was the only orthopaedic surgeon for the central and northern regions of the country, a catchment population of 6-7 million people. Returning to the UK in early 2003 I did a short knee surgery fellowship at Guy's and St Thomas' Hospitals in London before taking up my post in Blackpool.

In my UK practice I welcome referrals in general orthopaedics, but I have a special interest in lower limb arthroplasty and knee arthroscopy. I continue to return to Malawi on a regular basis where I am still involoved in training and research progammes.

Personal profile:

My interests include fitness training, running, sailing and marathon canoeing. I play jazz / blues percussion and the blues harmonica.

I am very much a local lad; both my grandmothers were boarding house landladies in Blackpool, I was educated at Arnold School and my first ever paid employment was on Blackpool Pleasure Beach selling hot-dogs!
